Drift your car with Tamiya TT-01/ TT-01E

Tamiya TT-01/ TT-01E have been famous entry RC cars. Most beginners have started racing RC car with a Tamiya TT-01/ TT-01E, from there some have gone far to race different RC cars, leaving it on the top shelves. In fact, there are different ways to play with TT-01/ TT-01E, drifting is one of them. Why not getting back to it again and convert it into a drift car?

There are a few things to note before converting it:

Basic idea of drift setups:

The setups should aid in inducing and maintaining controlled oversteer. The essential modifications for drifting are the Diff and suspension. A locking diff is needed in lengthening the drift duration. For set up in suspension, it should be stiffer on the rear to help break traction, and softer on the front to help aid traction. In other words, the rear should be as vertical as possible, while the front should be as angled as possible.

Detailed setups:

  1. Fully ball raced. The rolling friction will be reduced effectively, allowing for fast speed and smooth run.

  2. Restrict the movement of the rear diff, as it will break traction easily in the rear end of the car. It will also become steadier in drifting.

  3. Pay attention to the weight distribution. More weight should be put in the front, this way the car will have more control in the front and help pull the car through the drift. Furthermore, the weight in the chassis should be centered. Otherwise, it will tend to drift in one direction.

  4. Adjust the toe in, toe out and camber degree:

    • In the front and rear tyres, set the camber degree to ~2-3 degree. This will offer more control in corners and allow breaking traction easily.

    • Adjust a Toe in of ~2-3 degrees at the rear for better turning.

    • Set a Toe out of ~2-3 degrees at the front for sharper turns.

  5. Replace the tyres to low traction one. The 2 major types are resin or rubber/resin compound. Resin tyres break traction easily, whereas the compound tyres offer more grip.

What Hop Ups are recommended to aid drifting on a budget?

1. Yeah Racing Aluminium Main Center Shaft (# TT-014V2)

2. Rear diff lock/spool (#TT-133BU)

What Hop Ups are recommended to further improve the basic chassis?

1. Yeah Racing Steel/Alum Universal Shaft BU For Tamiya TT01/ TT01E (# TT-015V2BU)

  • This universal shaft will reduce the rolling friction, which means it will run faster and gain more stability as it goes.

2. Yeah Racing Aluminum Bearing Steering Set BU For Tamiya TT01E (#TT01E-042BU)

  • Effectively reduce the 'slop' from the standard plastic version

3. Yeah Racing Aluminum Rear Hub/Knuckle Arm 2 Degree BU For Tamiya TT01 (# TT-007V2BU)

  • For maintaining a 2 or 3 degree rear toe in.

4. 3Racing TT01-E33 Graphite Shock Tower Mount For TT-01E

  • Provides more mounting options for shocks

5.Tamiya (#53666) Metal Motor Mount For TT01/DF02

6.Yeah Racing Aluminum Solid Axle BU for Tamiya TT01 Series (#TT-069BU)
